Neiafu, Vava'u : A team of scientists is undertaking coastal marine surveys in Tongan waters to evaluate impacts to coral reefs and fisheries following the Hunga-Tonga Hunga-Ha'apai eruption in January 2022. Special Management Areas (SMAs) and aquaculture areas are of prime concern. With support from the Waitt Institute, the research vessel, “Plan b”, will arrive in Tongatapu today, 23 August, and conducting surveys until 5 September. -

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : The Government of Japan has committed three grant aid projects aimed to improve the waste management and water supply system, while extending the nationwide early warning system in Tonga. The grant aid projects formalized today, will not only help clean up the rubble and debris after the disaster but also establish better recycling, including scrapped cars. Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Clear signs of continuing volcanic activity were seen inside the deep caldera of the Hunga-Tonga Hunga-Ha'apai (HTHH) volcano by an unmanned remotely operated surface vessel, the (USV) Maxlimer on its first initial survey mission in Tonga. Scientists say it is too early to tell if it is due to a continuing eruption or hydrothermal venting from cooling lava or both. They are continuing with their surveys to map the caldera and the hydrothermal vents within it.Premium content
