Tonga Sevens rugby team failed to qualify for the Olympics at the repecharge tournament held on 19-20 June in Monaco. However, three Tongan players who played at the tournament have completed switching international allegiance to be able to play for Tonga's national fifteen-a-side team, 'Ikale Tahi.

Olympic hopes are alive for Tonga’s men’s national rugby 7s team after they defeated Papua New Guinea 31 – 0 to win 5th place at the Oceania Sevens Championship in Suva, Fiji over the weekend. The 5th place position means that they qualify for the Final Olympic Qualification Tournament to take place next year on 20-21 June at a location yet to be confirmed.
