Olympic hopes are alive for Tonga’s men’s national rugby 7s team after they defeated Papua New Guinea 31 – 0 to win 5th place at the Oceania Sevens Championship in Suva, Fiji over the weekend. The 5th place position means that they qualify for the Final Olympic Qualification Tournament to take place next year on 20-21 June at a location yet to be confirmed.

The Tonga Men’s 7s team finished in 22nd place out of 24 teams at the 2018 Sevens Rugby World Cup in San Francisco between 20 – 22 July. Tonga suffered three defeats to Kenya 19 – 7, Chile 33 – 29 and Papua New Guinea 31 - 14. Their only win came against Zimbabwe 31 – 5.
