Nuku'alofa, Tonga : We can confidently position first settlement in Ha’apai between 825 and 810 BC, only three generations (75 years) after the first Lapita canoes arrived at Fanga ‘Uta Lagoon on Tongatapu. The dates for individual Lapita sites are informative. They not only answer the question of when, but they reflect upon the process by which the expansion was undertaken. Within Ha‘apai, simultaneous settlement, widely dispersed hamlets on different islands, and small groups of people clearly speak to a planned and organized strategy. In its creation of a settlement network northward from Tongatapu, it brilliantly laid title to these islands. By David Burley. -

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Throughout the world keeping political interference out of sport is explicitly written into good Constitutions of sports bodies and their regulators. Tonga Rugby is no exception, but for the past two and a half years I have observed the intertwining of the TRU Leadership, in its quest for financial gain and personal advantage, and a political party in its quest to capture votes. I hope by sharing my experience it may bring more awareness of what is actually happening to Rugby Union in Tonga. By 'Inoke Afeaki. -

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : A tropical depression, expected to form into a cyclone later this week could threaten Tongatapu by the weekend, Tonga Meteorological Services reported today, 13 January. There is an 85% chance of the cyclone becoming severe, impacting Fiji and then Tonga on 17-18 January. -

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : While a record number of students sat senior exams in 2019, a majority of Tonga's Form Six students failed to pass their examinations, with the Ministry of Education reporting yesterday that the overall pass rate was only 38% for the Tonga Form Six Certificate, “a remarkable drop from the rate of 48% in 2018.”Premium content -

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : A 5.4 magnitude earthquake was felt on Tongatapu at 2:05 pm today. Tonga Meteorological Service reported that the earthquake was located 88km Southeast of Nuku'alofa at a depth of 83.9km. There is no tsunami threat to Tonga from this event. -

Canberra, Australia : Owing to the smoke from nearby wildfires, Canberra this month has had the world’s worst air-quality index, with readings 20 times above the official hazardous threshold. The city also recently experienced its hottest day on record (111°F/44°C). Meanwhile, Delhi had its coldest December day on record. Nuku'alofa, Tonga : An Otago University study is proposing that malaria in the past may have shaped the genome of Pacific people today, resulting in a genetic predisposition to Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes and gout. The elevated levels of uric acids, which can strengthen the immune response to the mosquito-borne disease are also what causes the inflammatory reactions in gout. “Pacific people have their own genetic variants,” says Dr Ana Gosling. -
