Two former All Blacks and a former Wallaby are included in a number of players considered to represent Tonga Sevens at the Olympic Sevens Repechage tournament next month in Monaco.

Athletes and officials are still waiting for the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and sporting International Federations (IF) to decide how many spots will be allowed for athletes to represent Tonga in their respective sports at the Tokyo Olympic Games, to be held from 23 July to 8 August 2021. Tonga's Sevens team for the Olympic Qualification in Monaco on June 19-20, will be selected from players in Europe, the Tonga Rugby Union CEO, Peter Harding announced tonight. This decision was taken because of the public health challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

An appeal by the Tonga National Rugby League (TNRL) against its expulsion from the International Rugby League (IRL) was dismissed by the international Court of Arbitration for Sport on 20 April. The judgement said that IRL officials had consistently reached out to TNRL, which continually refused to cooperate.

This year’s 2021 Rugby League World Cup will continue as scheduled, with the first game of the tournament set to kickoff on 23 October between hosts England and Samoa at St James’ Park Newcastle.
