Severe flooding in Nuku’alofa inundated roads this morning after overnight storms, with gale force winds and exceptional rainfall, toppled trees and brought down power lines on Tongatapu. Forecasters warned that a second line of squally weather would pass over southern Tonga tonight, bringing more rainfall. In less than 24 hours today, Saturday, 'Eua and Fua'amotu recorded more than twice their average monthly rainfall for the whole month of October.

An El Niño alert for Tonga was issued by the Meteorology Department, on 14 July, as forecasts show there is a 70% chance of El Niño forming this year. The likely impacts on Tonga will include cooler nights, less rainfall over the next 6-12 months, and more tropical cyclones in the next cyclone season from 1 November 2023 to 30 April 2024.

A first Tropical Cyclone advisory was issued at noon today, March 2, for Tropical Cyclone Kevin, a category 1 storm that may enter southern Tongan waters late on Sunday, 9 March, if it stays on its forecast track. It follows TC Judy (Cat. 3). Judy is forecast to pass further to the south on Saturday and is not likely to pose any direct threat to Tonga except for the Tele-ki-Tonga and Tele-ki-Tokelau coastal waters.

The Pacific is likely to experience a rare occurrence of what is called a double dip La Niña in the coming months, Climate models and predictions tools used by Pacific National Meteorological and Hydrological services (NMHSs) show. As a result, Pacific Island countries in the Central Pacific region such as Kiribati, Nauru and Tuvalu may experience below normal rainfall during this period, while islands in the South West Pacific will experience higher than normal rainfall, such as Fiji, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga and Vanuatu.

The Fua'amotu Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre was activated today and has issued a gale warning for the Niuas land areas, and a storm warning for other groups.

An extremely powerful Tropical Cyclone “Yasa”, is threatening Fiji today, where Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama warned people to prepare and evacuate low lying areas. Forecasters warned that wave heights around the eye of the storm could approach 14 meters (45 feet), with momentary gusts of up to 195 knots (390km/hr). TC Yasa threatens to cause damage on the scale of Tropical Cyclone Winston in 2016. Meanwhile, a Tropical Cyclone Alert is now in force for Tonga.

La Niña is officially underway in the Pacific, according to the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP). Tonga is among the countries in the South-West Pacific that will usually experience higher than normal rainfall, under these conditions that are likely to continue into the first quarter of 2021. The last La Niña conditions in the 2017-2018 season saw three cyclones in the Pacific- Gita, Hola and Fehi.
