Nuku'alofa, Tonga : The Kalonikali reports that a 25 member medical team from Australia is working in Tonga for a fortnight under an AusAID project. Cardiologists in the team have identified 16-18 cases of children and adults for treatment. Surgeon Dr Andrew Cochrane said the team brought equipment so that the surgery could be performed at Vaiola Hospital and the patients would not have to travel overseas for treatment. Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Tonga's political reform movement stalled this week with the parliament left in confusion over how to move forward, with some members calling for the termination of the Commission for Political Reform - before it has even been formed. Parliament was in an upheaval on Monday October 13 when the Prime Minister Dr Feleti Sevele told the House that the Cabinet nominee for the Political Reform Commission would not be available until January 2009, and that the House had a lot of issues to agree on first before the Commission could proceed with its deliberation on political reform. Puerto Varas, Chile : In 2006, the world consumed 110.4 million tonnes of fish, with 51.7 million tonnes of that originating from aquaculture. Production by traditional capture fisheries has reached a plateau, so to meet the projected demand for fish of an expanded world population, in 2030 aquaculture will need to produce an additional 28.8 million tonnes - 80.5 million tonnes overall - each year just to maintain per capita fish consumption at current levels. Geneva, Switzerland : More than 75% of people suffering from mental disorders in the developing world receive no treatment or care. A new WHO programme launched today, on World Mental Health Day 2008 highlights the huge treatment gap for a number of mental, neurological and substance use disorders. Across Africa for example, nine out of ten people suffering from epilepsy go untreated, unable to access simple and inexpensive anticonvulsant drugs which cost less than US$5 a year per person.
