    : Tonga's new Prime Minister Designate, Hon. Dr 'Aisake Eke is currently addressing the House after winning a ballot 16 votes to 8 votes, to defeat the rival nominee Dr Viliami Latu. There were 24 total votes in the secret ballot in the Legislative Assembly of Tonga this morning. Dr Eke is a former Minister of Finance, with a PhD in business administration from an Australian university.

    : The two nominees for Tonga's new Prime Minster Designate are Dr 'Aisake Valu Eke and  Dr Viliami Uasike Latu, both People's Representatives, the Lord Speaker announced this morning in a special meeting of the Tonga Legislative Assembly, where elected representives will take part in a secret ballot to elect the PM. Results were awaited at 3:00pm.

    : The Home Reef Volcano is growing and changing shape with a new lava lobe covering an estimated 75,000 square meters on the island between 4-15 December 2024, Tonga Geological Services reported today. The volcanic activity poses low risk to the Vava’u and Ha’apai communities. However, all Mariners are advised to sail beyond two nautical miles from Home Reef until further notice.

    : Multiple Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) flights to Vanuatu this week have delivered emergency responders and tonnes of search and rescue equipment and aid, while 93 New Zealanders and approved foreign nationals have been evacuated.     : Palatoni Laimani (37) is serving six years and six months in prison for possession of 155.90 grams of methamphetamine, seized in a police raid at his home in Hofoa. “It stands to reason that Mr. Laimani was dealing with others more heavily involved in illicit drug supply and so in turn, he forms part of serious organised criminal network,” stated the Judge.

    : David Kent Jr Tau’alupe (39) was jailed for one year for causing grievous bodily harm to ‘Alo’i Kei, when he stabbed him with a sharp object, causing a severe wound to his left upper abdomen, during a drink up altercation at the Laione Club in Vava’u. The judge said the offending with a concealed sharp object, “clearly signals a degree of planning and premeditation on his part coupled with the use of a highly dangerous weapon.”
