Hofoa car accident claims lives of two children

Two children aged 13 and 10 years from Sia'atoutai, died when a car rolled on Hala Hihifo in Hofoa yesterday, 22 January. The driver, who was the children's father (37), has been charged with reckless driving causing lives lost.

Tonga Police reported today, that the driver was traveling eastbound with his family when he overtook two vehicles. They said that this caused his car to lose control, swerve, and flip over. His children, a 13 year old boy, and a 10 year old girl, who were passengers, died.

Police said that Vaiola Hospital had confirmed that both of the deceased sustained severe head injuries and were pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.

Two other passengers in the vehicle were reported to be in satisfactory condition, while the driver sustained minor injuries.

The driver is currently in police custody and police investigations are ongoing.

“This unfortunate incident marks the third life lost in road accidents recently. Tonga Police strongly advises the public to be alert when on the road. "Drive responsibly at all times, particularly when children are passengers," Police stated.
