A 35-year-old man was arrested by the Police Drug Taskforce when he was found to be in possession of one pack of methamphetamine and 14 packs of cannabis that were ready to be distributed in Nuku’alofa yesterday, 7 May. A 27-year-old man was also arrested with a pack of cannabis.

Tonga's Prime Minister Hon. 'Akilisi Pohiva wants his son-in-law, Mateni Tapueluelu, to remain in Cabinet, and today refused to accept his resignation from two key government ministerial portfolios. The Prime Minister's Office revealed in a statement that Mateni was frustrated in his bid for greater authority over the Tonga Police and did not have the support of his Cabinet colleagues.

A falling tree branch on Taufa'ahau Road hit Senior Police Constable ‘Apisai Fihaki (36), knocking him unconscious and fracturing his right ribs, while he was responding to a call for emergency evacuation during Tropical Cyclone Gita. Five road deaths recorded this year is the lowest number of fatalities in over a decade. Between January and November this year, Tonga Police recorded 262 car crashes with five road fatalities - a significant drop from 18 road deaths recorded last year. Car crashes are most commonly attributed to drivers losing control, speeding, drink driving, and failing to give way or stop, police stated in urging drivers to make smart decisions on the road this summer.

Both His Majesty’s Armed Forces (HMAF) and Tonga Police confirmed today that they were not involved in a massive cocaine seizure by the French navy from a yacht "off Tongan waters" in recent days. French media reported today that over 1.4 tonnes of cocaine was seized from a sailing boat.
