Three women and a young child were rescued from a sinking boat yesterday afternoon, in Ha'apai, over six hours after the boat from Kotu island got into difficulties at sea. The skipper of the sinking boat swam to the island of Lofanga and a rescue was mounted to save the passengers before nightfall.

Raids by Tonga Police Drugs Squad over the past week have resulted in the arrest of 17 people on Tongatapu, allegedly involved with importation, intended sale, and distribution of methamphetamine. In several raids on August 9, 13-14, and 17, police seized a total of 6.1 kg kilograms of methamphetamine allegedly imported into Tonga from the United States. A customs officer, a prison officer, a prisoner, two Comanchero gang members and a local businessman, are among the suspects charged, Police reported today.

Tonga Police said the suspect, who was driving recklessly at high speed, had not been identified. Tonga Development Bank says it is taking legal action against Tonga Police following a police search of the bank's premises on Friday 24 May, where Police were acting on a complaint regarding an alleged breach of the Banking Act. UPDATED: The National Reserve Bank of Tonga told Matangi Tonga Online today, 4 June, that they had not made a complaint to the police regarding the TDB. “As this is an active police investigation, we cannot comment on the case but we can confirm that it was not NRBT who laid the complaint,” the NRBT stated.
