    : An appeal by Kepueli Mafi, against his conviction on dangerous driving causing the death of ‘Ahotau Taufu’i, was dismissed by the Court of Appeal, who found that his driving speed and manner was indeed dangerous when he slept on the wheel.

    : A captain of Tonga's inter-island domestic ferry, the MV ‘Otuanga’ofa, who was found guilty of proceeding to sea improperly by taking excess passengers on the vessel and serving knowing his Certificate of Competency had expired, was sentenced to two years imprisonment.

    : Tonga's Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Lord Tu'i'afitu, is under pressure to resign. The Prime Minister Hon. Hu'akavameiliku revealed yesterday in a media briefing that he is “having conversations” with the noble regarding his resignation from his ministerial portfolio. Although the PM did not state it directly, his comments suggested that the King in Privy Council has allegedly lost confidence in the minister.

    : A Motion for a Vote of No Confidence against the Prime Minister, Hon. Siaosi Sovaleni (Hon. Hu'akavameiliku) and the Prime Minister’s response, will be tabled in the Legislative Assembly of Tonga next week on Tuesday, 3 December, 2024, the Office of the Legislative Assembly confirmed in a statement last night.

    : Tonga's Prime Minister and his Cabinet must respond to a Motion for a Vote of No Confidence before midday on Friday - a deadline set by the Speaker when the House reopened this morning. Instead of proceeding with its work today, the House has adjourned until Tuesday 3 December. The Prime Minister said that no one would pay attention to the agenda while there was a submission “on the intention to bring down this Government.”

    : With COP29’s conclusion, the stage shifts to the Hague, where Vanuatu’s landmark International Court of Justice climate change case, will start on 2 December - with 110 UN member states and intergovernmental organisations testifying. Vanuatu's Special Envoy for Climate Change and Environment, stated yesterday that: “The commitments made in Baku — the dollar amounts pledged and the emissions reductions promised — are not enough. They were never going to be enough. And even then, based on our experience with such pledges in the past, we know they will not be fulfilled.”

    : A prisoner, Kali Malupo (57) was unsuccessful in his appeal against his conviction of causing grievous bodily harm, when he struck a 24-year-old man on the head using a machete in a group attack with his sons in Manuka, Tongatapu. However, in an appeal against sentence, his prison term was substantially reduced.

    Baku, Azerbaijan
    : Multi-million loan agreements for energy projects have been signed by Tonga, Solomon Islands and the Asian Development Bank last week, to help the transition from dependency on diesel fuel imports to renewable energy. The projects, also supported by a grant from Australia, will help Tonga to meet its 70% renewable energy target by constructing a new 33 kilovolt (kV) electricity network.

    : Taniela Vaka (42) was sentenced to 12 years and 10 months imprisonment on charges including armed robberies committed against three victims in two separate incidents, on Tongatapu. After the first incident the accused was caught and interviewed by police but, “Extraordinarily, it appears he was then released on bail. For a man who had just admitted an armed robbery that appears to raise some serious questions,” said the judge.
