Nuku'alofa, Tonga : An escaped convict, ‘Amoni Fifita (34), was sentenced to eight years imprisonment by the Tonga Supreme Court for the armed robbery of a store in Kolovai last year 2017. The getaway driver and father of 16 children, Pakileata Fukofuka (48), was sentenced to 3½ years jail with 18 months suspended.Premium content -

Brisbane, Australia : The Tonga Men’s Nines Rugby League team lost to Australia 14 – 8 in the final of the Rugby League 2018 Commonwealth Championship. The final became an 8-a-side match after a brawl in the opening minutes of the game led to two players from each team being sent-off. Nuku'alofa, Tonga : The Tonga Supreme Court has acquitted a teenager on charges of knowingly having consensual intercourse with a 14-year girl in 2017. The court accepted that the accused, who was 18 years old at the time, believed that the girl was 17 years and would not have had sexual intercourse with the girl if he knew she was 14. Nuku'alofa, Tonga : A fleet of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs, or drones) have been transported to Tonga with the support of the Australian government, to provide a comprehensive visual assessment of the damage caused by Cyclone Gita, the World Bank reports today. Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Chief Justice Paulsen of the Tonga Land Court scolded the Minister of Lands Hon. Ma’afu in a ruling of a land dispute case on 5 February. The ruling dismissed a decision by the Minister of Lands to regrant land registration to an overseas based Tongan man. The man wanted to evict his niece who had been living on a town allotment in Fanga for more than 40 years. -
