    : ‘Epuefi Laimani who is currently serving five-years imprisonment for possession of illicit drugs, including 5.15 grams of methamphetamine, and bribery of a police officer was denied an application to appeal against his conviction, at the Nuku'alofa Supreme Court. However, he was granted leave to appeal his sentence.

    : With England trapped in what it calls a vicious circle of junk-food consumption, the authors of a government-commissioned review into the nation’s food industry have put sugar and salt in their crosshairs. Poor diet contributes to about 64,000 deaths in England each year, the review found, with Type 2 diabetes projected to cost the National Health Service $20 billion a year by around 2035. Childhood obesity levels in Britain are at a critical level, says the Food Foundation.

    : Prolific thief, Penisimani Tupa's application for leave to appeal against his six-years nine-months sentence was denied by the Lord Chief Justice, at the Nuku'alofa Supreme Court, who noted the applicant's “appalling criminal history”, and that the applicant had learned nothing and therefore could not expect further leniency.

    : ‘Atapani Pangi (33) received a sentence of two-years and four-months imprisonment for possession of 183.3 grams of cannabis, seized at a house in Fo'ui. His co-accused, who owned the house also received a suspended sentence.

    : Wesley Fifita (29) who was convicted for possession of 0.04 gram of methamphetamine and 0.66 gram of cannabis at his house in Pili, received a suspended sentence. He must however, live with his parents, ordered a Supreme Court judge.

    : Fiji recorded 873 new COVID-19 cases and three deaths over a 24-hour period ending at 8:00am on July 12. The country’s Ministry of Health and Medical Services said with daily increases in cases, they were seeing increasing cases of severe COVID-19 and increasing deaths.

    : To date over 7625 people in Tonga have received their second dose of the COVID-19 Astra-Zeneca vaccine, since the second vaccination roll out started on June 24 in Nuku'alofa. Meanwhile, the Ministry aims to inoculate up to 70 percent of Tonga's population by December this year.
