    : Five more packets of cocaine were seized last night by the Tonga Police Drugs Enforcement Taskforce, during a raid of a home in Ha'alaufuli, Vava'u. Eleven cocaine packets, including six handed over to Police this week, have been recovered after being washed up on shore. The total street value of the illicit drugs recovered is now estimated to be over $4 million pa'anga. Police suspect that more of the washed-up drugs are still in the community.

    : Siosaia Tu Maile (20) was sentenced yesterday to eight-years imprisonment for the manslaughter death of Ned Cook (67), the Salvation Army Team Leader in Nuku'alofa in 2020, who was punched in the face when he was walking home from an evening out. "In that split second of senseless brutality, one life was ended and the liberty of another must now be severely curtailed," said the Chief Justice. He noted that in Tonga, some in the community tend to resort to violence to address any annoyance, no matter how small. “This case must serve to deter others from such behaviour, which will be met with severe sentences from the Courts.”

    : A 76-year-old woman died last night, July 27 at Vaiola Hospital from the Nuku'alofa CBD house fire, which has now claimed three lives. A man (61) and a child (7) also died. Their names have not yet been confirmed by Tonga Police.

    : New York Times reporting: Simone Biles’s withdrawal was a stunning turnabout for the Americans, who had dominated the gymnastics team events in Tokyo, and it came hours after another superstar athlete, Naomi Osaka, was upset in the third round of the women’s singles tennis tournament by a player with a far lower ranking. Both athletes came into the Olympics, expected to bring home gold medals and to fulfil the obligations of a global celebrity, then buckling under the high demands of the Olympic stage. But Biles, Osaka and others in their generation have been vocal about putting their mental health first.
