Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Tonga is experiencing a sugar famine that’s likely to last another month. Containers of sugar expected to arrive this weekend have missed shipping connections and will not reach Tonga until the end of August, according to one importer, who is still waiting for his January order to arrive. Deliveries that used to take 6-8 weeks are now taking 5-6 months to arrive in Tonga.

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : A new landing barge that can transfer vehicles, cargo and passengers to beaches and islands that do not have wharves, was launched in Nuku'alofa on Saturday 10 July. Nuku'alofa, Tonga : The jailed Minister of Infrastructure and Tourism ‘Akosita Lavulavu (36) and her husband ’Etuate (62) were this morning denied bail pending their appeal. Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Kautai Moala (38) was sentenced to five and a half-years imprisonment for possession of 19.49 grams of methamphetamine seized at Ngele'ia. Suva, Fiji : Fiji opened its first COVID-19 vaccination drive-through at Suva's Albert Park Pavillion on 6 July as the country battles with rapidly increasing new cases. The Ministry of Health and Medical Services reported 636 new COVID-19 cases and 6 deaths over a 24-hour period on 7 July. -

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Questions in parliament this morning once again failed to win any clarity from the Prime Minister on the salaried status of his jailed Minister of Infrastructure and Tourism. No new ministers have been appointed to the portfolios held by 'Akosita Lavulavu, who started five years imprisonment on Friday July 2.
