Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Tonga could expect two to three cyclones this season, and Tonga Met says there's a chance that at least one of them could be a Severe Tropical Cyclone (Category 3 and above). The current cyclone season began on 1 November and runs through to the end of April 2017. -

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : An 18 month long project to support the development of the vanilla industry in Vava'u this year has also helped Tonga's MAFF and Australian development partners to better understand the challenges and opportunities faced by vanilla growers and the vanilla industry. Over 100 vanilla growers were directly assisted and 328 plantations monitored under the project, which has identified a need for new plantings, particularly on small family plantations. -

Nuku'alofa : Tonga's Minister for Public Enterprises, Hon. Poasi Tei received a dividend cheque of $4,345,262 pa'anga, presented by the Chairman of the Common Utilities Board of Directors, Carl Sanft on November 29. The Combined Utility Dividend for the year 2016 goes to the Government of Tonga, being the sole shareholder of power, water and waste utilities and the subsidiary companies Tonga Gas Ltd. and Home Gas Ltd. -

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : The skipper of a whale watching boat, the 'Ha’apai Explorer" was injured when its engine exploded at sea on Saturday, November 26. The boat with two foreign passengers on board, was on its way back to Pangai from Limu Island in the Ha’apai Group when the accident happened.Premium content

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Tonga's unemployment statistics are grim, with youth unemployment reaching as high as 40% in rural areas, according to some estimates. The Tonga Youth Employment and Entrepreneurship (TYEE), a Non-Government Organisation that was set up due to the high rate of unemployment in Tonga, has helped 175 young people gain employment. Hawaii, USA : One man and two women, all of Tongan heritage, are facing jail sentences for beating a security guard unconscious at a bar in Maui, Hawaii last month. They have been accused of kicking the guard in the head several times as he was lying on the ground. The guard was transported to hospital where he recovered. Suva, Fiji : In the Pacific, non-communicable diseases account for around 70% of all deaths, in Fiji that number is 80%, and the tragedy is that most of these deaths are preventable, Dr Tim Martyn of the UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation in Fiji told delegates from Small Island States, meeting in Suva.
