 Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Damage estimated at nearly $39 million pa'anga was inflicted on Tonga’s agricultural sector by the Jan. 15 Hunga Tonga - Hunga Ha’apai eruption, which energised a tsunami and heavy volcanic ash fall over Tonga. While root crops that are ready to be harvested were not affected, the last season crops that were just sprouting were wiped out, said Viliami Manu, CEO for the Ministry of Agriculture.  Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Tulapa Samoa Pese (38) was sentenced to three-years imprisonment for causing serious bodily harm to a 22-year-old man with a machete at Lapaha. The judge found that the defendant carefully calculated and planned his attack. The way he carried out the attack was chilling, they ambushed the victim. “This is not only brutal; it is a cowardly behaviour to attack an unarmed person,” he said at the sentencing.  Nuku'alofa, Tonga : A man in his 40s was sentenced to two-years six-months imprisonment for three counts of serious indecent assault of a minor aged 12 years old, in Tongatapu. Hon.  Nuku'alofa, Tonga : When Tongatapu’s small business community met on Thursday Jan. 27, to discuss their concerns, amid an unfolding national catastrophe, following volcanic eruptions and devastating tsunamis, they slumped in chairs and their faces showed how seriously concerned, worried, exhausted and frustrated they are. But after all of that, what's really destroying them is the total failure of Tonga's international communications two weeks ago. Tonga's telecommunications authorities have put spectrum licensing roadblocks around the local private sector's ability to find relief in a commercial satellite broadband service solution.  Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Around 95 children and youths, among the families evacuated from ‘Atata Island after the tsunamis destroyed their homes on Saturday Jan. 15, are currently staying at a Church Hall in Kolomotu'a, Nuku'alofa and also at a Hofoa evacuation station, where the Talitha Project is actively supporting their recovery from trauma.  Nuku'alofa, Tonga : An intoxicated driver, Siuta Taufa (25), who was speeding to get home before the midnight curfew, was found guilty of dangerous driving causing the death of his passenger in an accident on Taufa‘ahau Road, at Malapo in July 2021.  Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Sixty two survivors, including about 18 children and babies, evacuated from Mango Island, Ha'apai Group, were brought to Tongatapu on Saturday Jan. 22 by a Tongan navy patrol boat. Two Tonga Red Cross trauma counsellors were meeting the families and talking to them after their extraordinary ordeal. The community leaders have shared their stories of survival.  Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Only underground water supplied by the Tonga Water Board may be used for bottled water that is processed in Tonga, to sell for public consumption, the Ministry of Health said on Monday, Jan 17. The restriction was introduced following the volcanic eruption at Hunga Tonga and Hunga Ha’apai islands on Jan. 15, which spread tons of ash over Tonga, affecting water tanks collection.  Nuku'alofa, Tonga : The people evacuated from Mango island in Ha'apai are being brought to Tongatapu, to relieve pressure on Nomuka, where the whole population of Mango were moved last week, the new Prime Minister Hon. Siaosi Sovaleni, said on Friday Jan. 21, at his second public briefing, following the Hunga Tonga - Hunga Ha‘apai volcanic eruption and tsunamis that hit Tonga on Saturday Jan. 15.  Nuku'alofa, Tonga : A team of Tongan geologists who went out to observe the Jan. 14 eruption of the Hunga Tonga Hunga Ha'apai volcano witnessed spectacular explosions on the dangerous mission on Friday afternoon. The pulsating explosions throughout the day were also viewed from weather satellites in space.

 Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Mikaele Hoponoa Pahulu (42) was sentenced to 11 years and 7 months imprisonment for manslaughter in a sadistic, brutally violent attack on a frail 71-year-old patient at the Psychiatric Ward in Vaiola Hospital. “This was manslaughter just short of murder, possibly only because that was not charged. Why murder was not charged has never been explained,” said the Supreme Court judge. “It is just barbaric.” Another person stood alongside, watched and walked away leaving the victim unconscious on the ground.
