TONGA GOVERNMENT SCHOLARSHIPS

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS FOR 2026 INTAKE

The 2026 Tonga Government Scholarships Programme (TGS), funded by the Government of Tonga, offers scholarships for academic study either within the Pacific region or in New Zealand, subject to programme availability and alignment with national priorities.

Recipients of TGS scholarships are required to return to Tonga upon completion of their studies and fulfil a service commitment at the designated Ministry, agency, or institution as stipulated in the Government of Tonga Scholarship Agreement. Both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes are eligible under this scheme.

Scholarships will be awarded in fields that directly support Tonga’s strategic development goals, including:

  • Education and Health
  • Agriculture and Climate Resilience (environmental and economic sustainability)
  • Public Administration and Governance
  • Infrastructure and ICT

The scholarship application form contains comprehensive details about eligibility criteria, approved programmes of study, designated educational institutions, and the relevant sponsoring ministries and education systems. Applicants are advised to thoroughly review this information before selecting their programme of study. Please ensure that you are eligible to apply before submitting your application.

Candidates are selected according to academic excellence, demonstrated financial need, relevant professional experience for postgraduate applicants, and the degree to which their proposed studies align with Tonga’s development priorities.

The National Scholarship Committee particularly welcomes applications from the following groups: students from the outer islands, current Form 7 students or recent school leavers, individuals seeking employment within the Government of Tonga, teachers in non-government education systems, postgraduate candidates pursuing development-focused research, and privately funded tertiary students experiencing financial hardship.

Applicants are advised to apply for admission to their intended program of study either at the time of submitting their TGS application or as soon as possible afterward. Prior to accepting a scholarship offer, applicants must provide proof of acceptance into a relevant course of study. The Scholarship Committee will make the final decision regarding the host University.

Application forms are available from the Scholarships Unit at the Ministry of Education and Training Head Office, Ápimataka, Tofoa; as well as from Vava’u High School, Ha’apai High School, ‘Eua High School, Niuatoputapu High School, and Niuafo’ou High School.
