A leading University in China, the Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU), last week officially launched a Tongan Language Program, the first of its kind to be offered by an education provider in China.

Boat owners and operators in Vava’u, Ha’apai, and ‘Eua, are being urged to better equip themselves and their boats before heading out to sea, as part of a Tongan outreach Maritime Safety Campaign called "Be Ready, Be Safe."

An online course to learn the Tongan language, has been developed by Joshua Tanner, a former LDS missionary to Tonga. The course is for anyone interested in learning the language, especially Tongans living overseas who don't speak the language, and he's made it available for a token enrolment fee that never expires.

The 143 government primary school students at Kolonga on Tongatapu were happy to receive school materials, reading books, sports gear donated by visiting students from Kohia Terrace School in Auckland. The visiting New Zealand students included Talia Vea and Lipoi Tupou.

Twenty-one Tongans received admission letters from the Chinese Government confirming their scholarships to study at Chinese universities, at the award ceremony on 15 August at Kahana Resort. They are expected to arrive in China prior to 8 September to begin learning the Chinese language before commencing their studies.
