Three years after Tonga’s Ministry of Education reformed Tonga’s examination marking system, and replaced its Standardized Marks System with a "National Raw Marks - Outcome Based System" there is still confusion and reaction against the new system in Tonga. Parents are complaining to their Members of Parliament that school certificates issued in Tonga are not recognised by higher education institutions overseas.

Twenty-six Tongan students have been awarded tertiary scholarships to study in New Zealand and Fiji starting this year, funded by the New Zealand Government through its Aid programme. New Zealand universities have accepted 21 scholars, while Fiji’s University of the South Pacific has accepted six.
