A gale warning and small craft advisory remain in force for Tele-ki-Tonga and Tele-ki-Tokelau coastal waters, as Tropical Cyclone Mal moves to the south of Fiji and and moves toward southern Tongan waters. A strong wind warning and small craft advisory remains in force for Tongatapu and 'Eua coastal waters, stated the Fua'amotu Tropical Cyclone Centre advisory at 1:00pm today, Wednesday 15 November.

The Fua’amotu Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre was activated at 10:00am this morning, for Severe Tropical Cyclone Kevin which has strengthened into a category 3 storm. It is expected to bring gale force winds into southern Tongan waters, from Sunday, based on its latest forecast track.

A first Tropical Cyclone advisory was issued at noon today, March 2, for Tropical Cyclone Kevin, a category 1 storm that may enter southern Tongan waters late on Sunday, 9 March, if it stays on its forecast track. It follows TC Judy (Cat. 3). Judy is forecast to pass further to the south on Saturday and is not likely to pose any direct threat to Tonga except for the Tele-ki-Tonga and Tele-ki-Tokelau coastal waters.

Tropical Cyclone Ana has weakened into a Category 1 storm as it moves into southern Tongan waters today. The Fua’amotu Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre, at 5pm Monday, said a gale warning remains in force. On its current track, it could bring destructive storm force winds to Tele-ki-Tonga and Tele-ki-Tokelau and damaging gale force winds over Ha'apai, Tongatapu and 'Eua, early Tuesday morning.

A gale wind warning is now in force for all of Tonga land areas and coastal waters as Tropical Depression 11F was located 55km west southwest of Niuafo’ou or 245km west of Niuatoputapu or 385km northwest of Vava'u at 7:00pm this evening. There is a high chance for the system to develop into a tropical cyclone tonight, according to Tonga Meteorological Services.

A Tropical Cyclone warning for Tonga was cancelled by Tonga Meteorological Services this morning, as TC Mona moves away from the group. At 7:00am today, the Category 1 cyclone was located 310km west northwest of Nuku’alofa, moving southwest at 10 knots or 18km/hr.

Strong wind warnings are currently in place for all land and sea areas of Vava’u and the Niuas as Tropical Cyclone Amos slowly intensifies and tracks towards the Niuas and Samoa today, warns the Tonga Meteorology Department. The cyclone Category 2 is moving southeast and has the potential to develop into a Category 3 storm over the next few days.

Initial reports have confirmed no casualties in Vava'u which has escaped major damage to infrastructure, apart from fallen trees due to Tropical Cyclone Ula. A state of emergency issued only for Vava’u and Ha’apai remains in force to be reviewed. While Tonga's climate experts say that a lack of moisture to drive the system prevented it from intensifying into a devastating Category 4 or 5 storm.

A Tropical Cyclone Warning is now in force for Vava‘u, Ha‘apai, Tongatapu and 'Eua as Tropical Depression 15F approaches Tonga and is forecast to become a Category 1- 2 cyclone as it moves through southern Tonga on Saturday and Sunday. On its current track and if the depression continues to intensify, the centre is expected to lie about 290km west-northwest of Nomuka or 265km northwest of Nuku'alofa at 7:00pm this evening. Latest forecast at 9:00am from Fua'amotu TCWC.
