Tropical Cyclone Judy which has strengthened into a category 2 and bearing down on Vanuatu is not likely to pose any direct threat to Tonga.
The Tonga Meteorological Services in its South Pacific Tropical Cyclone Advice no.3 at 4:00pm, today 28 February, stated that TC Judy was located near latitude 13.9 south and longitude 168.4 east or about 430km north of Port Vila, Vanuatu.
This wass 1920km west northwest of Nuku’alofa, Tonga at 3:00pm on 28 February.
“The average wind speed near the center of the system is 55 knots and it is moving southwest at about 6 knots. The system is not likely to pose any direct threat to Tonga in the next 24 to 48 hours.”
Tonga Met will issue updated advice on 1 March.
