In a decision on Friday, Tonga's Cabinet turned down a Petition by the Public Service Association to defer the implementation of a new civil service salary structure from 1 July 2016 to 1 January 2017. A move to increase the salary of the Prime Minister to $100,000 per annum was also deferred.

Thirty-five royal Tongan marines are currently in participating in the world's largest international maritime warfare exercise, Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC 2016), in Hawaii. Tonga Police have released the names of three people who died after a fatal crash on Hihifo Road at 'Ahau early Saturday morning 2 July. They are Kalolaine Quick of the Heilala Holiday Lodge at Kanokupolu, Lower Leaving Ma'u from Haveluloto and an off duty policeman Scott 'Ungo'unga. His wife Vai 'Ungo'unga remains in a critical condition in Vaiola Hospital.
