Tonga's domestic fibre-optic submarine communications cable went out again yesterday following a series of strong earthquakes, centred in Ha'apai, that also shook the capital. Tonga Cable Acting CEO Mr Sosafate Kolo confirmed the outage, to Matangi Tonga this afternoon. Cable communications to Vava'u and Ha'apai are cut.

Steam is continuously emitted from the vent of Home Reef volcano, indicating that volcanic activities are still ongoing at the reef, which has grown in size by up to 8 acres between June 15-30 as a result of lava flows, Tonga Geological Services reported today. The volcanic activity poses a low risk to the Vava’u and Ha’apai communities.

The Home Reef Volcano has shown a decrease in thermal anomalies. In the last 16 hours, three new thermal anomalies were recorded, with the latest event at 3:56 AM this morning, the Volcano Watch Team of the Tonga Geological Services, reported this morning. No ash cloud has been detected in the last 16 hours.

Capital punishment as a deterrent for illicit drugs offences, was rejected 38 to 8 by debaters who were invited by the Speaker, Lord Fakafanua, to participate in the first public debate held in the Parliament House in Nuku'alofa yesterday, 28 May. Those who argued for the right to life, said there was not any evidence to show that the death penalty was a deterrent and there were other solutions aside from executions.

Domestic rainwater tanks are often contaminated and unsafe to drink if not managed and cleaned regularly, a recent study has shown. Conducted by Tonga's Ministry of Health, Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, and the Asian Development Bank, the study found drinking water is often contaminated with E. coli.

Four participants of the Tonga cohort of the 2023 Pacific Greenpreneurs Program graduated today, with two recipients awarded total funds of USD$55,000 (approximately TOP $130,000). Mr Masa Kawaguchi, director of South Pacific Mozuku Ltd, a growth-stage green enterprise in Tonga, was awarded a USD $50,000 zero-interest repayable grant. Mrs Lu'isa Nau, owner of Culture Fusion Tonga, winner of the Business Plan competition, was awarded USD $5,000 for an innovative business model.

The announcement by the Speaker of the Tongan Parliament, Lord Fakafanua in Parliament on 16 August that the House is no longer funding the daily radio broadcast of the Proceedings of the House, surprised members of Parliament. It was also a shocking announcement for members of the public who were keenly listening to the debate on the Auditor General's Report for 2021-2022. The Auditor's Report exposes a litany of weaknesses in many Ministries and reveals the wide extent of inadequate reporting of government expenditures. It raises concerns about government's recent capital expenditures, inadequate assets registers and discrepancies between the Sun System and Ministries financial reports. From the House by Pesi Fonua.

The SPBD Annual Business Women of the Year Awards, held on June 2, 2023, at the St. Andrew School Hall, celebrated the remarkable achievements of female entrepreneurs in SPBD Tonga. The event recognized four outstanding women as Winners of the Awards from different regions in Tonga: Mrs Pelenaise Folau (Tongatapu), Mrs Siosi Ma’u (Vava’u), Mrs Mina Taufalele (Ha'apai), and Mrs Kilisita Loni ('Eua). Other awards to SPBD women entrepreneurs, acknowledged their accomplishments in various categories.

The February Consumer Price Index reported inflation annual rate at 8.7%, a decline from 9.7% in the previous month, and lower than 9.1% in February 2022. Inflation has generally been easing from its peak of 14% in September 2022. The Reserve Bank’s Governor Tatafu Moeaki stated that “the February 2023 Monetary Policy Statement adjustment to the money supply and its exchange rate policy remains a priority to fight against inflation and will keep a tight stance where appropriate to minimize the negative impacts on families purchasing power especially the poorer and vulnerable.”
