Home Reef Volcano shows decrease in thermal activity today

The Home Reef Volcano has shown a decrease in thermal anomalies. In the last 16 hours, three new thermal anomalies were recorded, with the latest event at 3:56 AM this morning, the Volcano Watch Team of the Tonga Geological Services, reported this morning.

The decrease in thermal anolies was shown in the latest MODIS-MIROVA satellite imagery from 18 June 2024 as evidenced by the non-numeric values for the VRP compared to the previous report (Figure 2).

“There was no ash/cloud detected from the Home Reef volcano as of the last 16 hours,” TGS stated in their third advice released at 10:00am today.

“The volcanic activity poses a low risk to the Vava’u and Ha’apai Communities. However, all Mariners are advised to sail beyond 4 km from Home Reef until further notice. A hazard map (Figure 3) to guide all mariners sailing near Home Reef.

“The public is hereby advised to adhere to these restrictions for safety purposes,” TGS advised.

Home Reef is located 25 km southwest of Late Island, 22 km northeast of Lateiki (Metis Shoal), and 75 km northwest of Mo’unga’one Island at Latitude & Longitude 18.992°S & 174.775°W (Figure 4 - Location Map). Monitoring of the volcano is ongoing daily on the status of the eruption.
