Dubai, United Arab Emirates : Pacific Leaders, who view climate change impacts as a serious "existential threat", have declared their region under a State of Climate Emergency, the Director General of the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) Mr. Sefanaia Nawadra told a high-level segment on Climate Change at COP28, in Dubai, UAE on 9 December.

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : 'Akimeta Tu’utafaiva (40) was jailed for causing serious bodily harm in a drunken violent outburst at Kolofo'ou, when he injured his 20-year-old nephew, causing a permanent disability on his left index finger. The judge said that it was unclear why the full extent of the dangerous and violent outburst, apparently involving attacks on property and an attempt to injure another with the machete, was not fully indicted. Dubai, United Arab Emirates : A global stocktake is a process for countries and stakeholders to see where they’re collectively making progress towards meeting the goals of the Paris Climate Change Agreement, and where they’re not. A series of high-level events at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP28) will help move the world’s first global stocktake closer to a conclusion. Nuku'alofa, Tonga : The Lulutai Airline's Saab 340 aircraft slid off the taxiway at the Fua'amotu Domestic Airport with a full load passengers, early this afternoon, hitting a low concrete wall, after it earlier aborted landing at the Lupepau’u Airport in Vava’u. Early reports say there were no injuries, but passengers were screaming after a landing gear collapsed. One man was carried off the plane by responding soldiers. Premium content -

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : The 12th defendant to be sentenced for being involved in distributing a portion of a salvaged shipment of cocaine washed up in Vava'u in 2021, was sentenced five and a half-years' imprisonment, partially suspended, for engaging in dealings with another person to transfer a Class A illicit drug to Tongatapu. Honiara, Solomon Islands : Tonga is bringing home two gold medals from the 2023 Pacific Games after the national netball team, Tala, won gold at Friendship Hall in Honiara, on Saturday, 2 December. Tonga also bagged a respectable number of silver and bronze medals. New Caledonia won an overwhelming 197 medals at SOL2023 held in Honiara, Solomon Islands, from 19 November to 2 December. -

Dubai, UAE : A State of the Global Climate report confirms that 2023 is set to be the warmest year on record. Data until the end of October shows that the year was about 1.40 degrees Celsius above the pre-industrial levels, delegates at COP28 heard. Tonga's Prime Minister Hon. Hu'akavameiliku and delegates, are in Dubai for the 28th meeting of the United Nations Climate Change Conference or Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC (COP28) that runs from 30 November to 12 December.
