Auckland, New Zealand : Royal New Zealand Navy Hydrographers on the HMNZS Matataua will be in Tonga to survey its landscape in August. They are currently in Niue doing the same charter survey, which will be completed at the end of July as a part Exercise Tropic Twilight.

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Rodney Toki (28) who is currently serving a lengthy jail term for a string of armed robberies, at Chinese-run shops in Tonga, has been sentenced to five-years and four-months imprisonment for other offences in a crime spree that spanned from late July until the end of August 2021. Matatoa-Tofoa, Tonga : Tonga Power Ltd. is grateful for the emergency aid assets to support recovery of Tonga's distribution network, which were handed over by the Australian Government this week. This is in response to the requests for assistance after the electricity grid in the coastal areas of Tongatapu was heavily affected by the tsunami in January, during the eruption of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai volcano. -

Birmingham, United Kingdom : Today, over 5000 competitors from nations as far afield as Malaysia to Jamaica converge on Birmingham for the Commonwealth Games. The Games is perhaps the most visible aspect of the Commonwealth for many of our 2.5 billion citizens. Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Hausia Vaka (43) was sentenced to seven and a half years imprisonment for causing grievous bodily harm, when he attacked and severely injured his neighbour's left hand with a machete at Makapaeo."What he did was attack a defenseless man on the ground and aimed a machete blow at his head, which in turn caused these life-changing injuries," said the judge. Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Vincent Mavaetangi Niua (51) was sentenced to eight-years imprisonment for attempted murder of a woman, with whom he was in a defacto relationship. “In my view, it is more likely that he was feeling scorned by the complainant having ended the relationship and, consistent with his egotistically controlling manner, was intent on revenge and subjugation by ending her life. ...His actions can only be described as appalling and sadistic,” said the Judge. Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Nganga e Hau Lao (55) received a suspended sentence of one year for cultivation of 43 cannabis plants seized at his home in Tatakamotonga. Police raided the defendant's home address and found him sitting on the floor of his living room reading the bible. The cannabis plants were found growing behind his home. Premium content -

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : A 22-year-old man was found dead in a cell at the Mu'a Police station on Saturday with hours of his arrest. It was the second death in police custody at the same station this month. Police claimed that the circumstances indicated suicide, as they did with the earlier death in custody on 4 July. Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Tonga's borders will open on 1 August, with the number of weekly flights increasing slowly over the next two months, the Tonga Government announced last night. Adults must prove they are vaccinated for COVID-19 (unless exempted) with at least two doses, and all passengers must have a supervised negative rapid antigen test (RAT) before departure.
