Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Tonga’s aim to reach 50% of renewable energy by 2020 is on track said Tonga Power Ltd CEO, Seti Chen. “The goal of renewable energy is to reduce our reliance on fossil fuel (diesel),” he told Matangi Tonga, while they have seen growth in demand for power increasing more than they thought it would. He said one of the biggest misconceptions is people thinking their electricity bills will be reduced by 50% once the project is completed. “It’s not 50% off the tariff that will be reduced, it’s actually 50% off the diesel that we are displacing,” said Seti. Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Tropical Cyclone Neil (Cat.1) is expected to pass directly over Tonga tonight, bringing heavy rain and wind gusts up to 55 knots (101km/hr) in Ha'apai and Tongatapu. The Fua'amotu Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre at 8:00pm tonight, Saturday February 9, stated that a heavy rain warning and flash flood advisory is now in force for all of Tonga. -

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Two Tongan Navy patrol boats were moved out from Masefield Naval Base at Touliki to anchor in deeper water offshore this morning, as a low pressure system brought strong winds and gales into Tongatapu. Strong winds and heavy rain are expected to continue throughout the day and more rough weather is forecast for the weekend. Tonga Met maintained a storm warning in its 1:00pm advisory.
