Nuku'alofa, Tonga : The Tonga Government is currently negotiating to sell some of its shares in Tonga Cable Ltd. to Digicel to cover a shortfall in the funding it needs to connect Vava’u and Ha'apai to the submarine fibre optic telecommunications cable network that has linked Tongatapu to the rest of the world since 2013. Nuku'alofa, Tonga : In a first global ranking on how effectively children can use the courts to defend their rights, Tonga was ranked 165 out 197 countries worldwide, a low standing attributed to not having a separate juvenile court or system for children and limited implementation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Apart from loss of agricultural food crops, some damage to schools, Ngu Hospital and HMAF Camp Fangatongo, Vava‘u has emerged from Cyclone Winston’s two close passes without significant damage to major infrastructure, an official assessment survey has concluded. Suva, Fiji : Tongan USP students living in the Laucala Campus in Suva, Fiji, are safe after Cyclone Winston left a path of destruction yesterday, 21 February 2016. However, USP students living in Labasa and Lautoka had not yet made contact and attempts to contact them were "futile" due to a nationwide power outage affecting communication, USP's Dr Masasso Paunga stated this morning. Nuku'alofa, Tonga : The latest Tropical Cyclone Advisory (No. 29) for Tonga on Tropical Cyclone Winston issued by the Fua’amotu Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre at 4.30 pm Friday, 19 February 2016 has downgraded a storm warning to gales for Vava'u, Niuatoputapu, Niuafo’ou and Ha’apai. A strong wind warning remains in force for Tongatapu and ‘Eua. -
