    : Living in small tents superheated by the mid-summer sun, while going through the trauma of the devastation caused by Tropical Cyclone Ian, is the reality of life for families in the Ha'apai Group who are relying on outside assistance, after loosing all on the afternoon of January 11. A survey team has estimated that by mid-February the food crops would be used up in all the districts of Kauvai Ha’ano, Lifuka, Foa and ‘Uiha, which were badly damaged.     : New Zealand is providing an extra $370,000 to assist relief efforts in Ha’apai including sending over technicians to help repair the electricity network. The announcement brings New Zealand’s support for the cyclone response to $2.27 million.

    : A 19-year-old woman who fell from the back of a van at Lapaha, was the first road death for 2014, and one of four accidental deaths in Tonga last week. Tonga Police also confirmed that two young girls had died in Tongatapu - one from drowning and one from serious injuries, while a diver in Ha'apai had died from decompression.

    : A suspended Police Constable Valeliano Manu (33) and two foreign nationals, Chinchiu Liu (aka Kevin Liu) (31), and ShiQing Lin (32) were jailed on January 21 for over five years for importing over 2 kilos of the controlled chemical pseudoephedrine. A fourth man was jailed for possession. The case involved the importation and possession of a cold remedy known as “contac NT”.

    : Five significant Tongan patrimonial artifacts are expected to fetch around 19,000 Euros ($50,000 pa'anga) when they are auctioned in Brussels, on Friday January 24, for an unnamed private owner. While critics of the sale say the objects are an invaluable part of Tonga's cultural heritage and should not leave the kingdom to be sold in Europe.

    : Electric power has been restored to over 100 homes and shops in Ha‘apai's main town Pangai, Ha'apai. However, Tonga Power Ltd's CEO John Van Brink has estimated it will cost around $5 million pa'anga to rebuild a more cyclone resistant power network on the island group, and the work will take a few months.
