    : Queen Elizabeth II has died, Buckingham Palace announced this morning. “The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon,” the official royal.uk website announced on Thursday 8 September 2022 (UK time). The Union flag on top of the Buckingham Palace was lowered to half-mast at 18:30 BST (6:30am Friday, Tonga time).

    : Volcanic activity reported from submarine vents on Fonualei Island on 2 September is normal activity and there is no alarm or threat, says Tonga Geological Services, after discolouration of the sea on the coast of the island, situated 75km NNW of Vava’u, was reported by marine biologists mapping the area last week.

    : A seven-year-old boy died in a shooting incident at a residence in Ha'ateiho, Tongatapu, on Friday evening, 2 September. Tonga Police said children found a loaded .22 rifle in their family vehicle. The 40 year old father of the children has been arrested.

    : A pregnant mother of four, Kahealani Tonga (38) was sentenced to 14-months imprisonment, which was fully suspended, for possession of 2.09 grams of methamphetamine. “Though she may not have been the person making the money from the deal she was facilitating this devastating trade, which is a scourge that destroys the minds and lives of so many people in Tonga," said the judge.
