Sydney, Australia : Disappointment in the so-called political reformists (those who have submitted proposed changes to the political system) in Tonga, for want of details in their proposed reforms, has been voiced in this forum and I must say that those who share the sentiment have a valid point. The reformists talk about constitutional changes and appointments of Ministers but, as far as I am aware, are silent on the nature of the political system they want to replace the present one with. - Lisiate Ikaafu -

Tallahassee, Florida,USA : I am dismayed to read articles in the Matangi that have portrayed Tonga's entry into the WTO as terrible move for the Tongan people. With all due respect to OXFAM, (who has made it their business to criticize the world's largest trading organization), Tonga's entry into the WTO is a milestone for the nation. - John Maloney -

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : A major undersea earthquake occurred close to Tonga and Fiji, at at 11:13:40 am Tonga time (10:13:40 am Fiji time) this morning January 3. The quake shook buildings in central Nuku'alofa for a few seconds, but so far no damage has been reported, and none was immediately obvious. Premium content -

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : As of November 2005 Tonga's official Foreign Reserve held by the National Reserve Bank of Tonga was $81.8 million, an amount equivalent to 4.3 months of imports of goods. The November Foreign Reserve was $0.6 million less than that of October. Premium content -

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Only four people have died on Tonga's roads so far this year - the lowest road toll in three years - but, tragically, in 2005 the victims were children who were hit while crossing the road, while the number of non-fatal road accidents has increased on previous years. USA : The year (2005) is about to turn and leave us all in the dust and 2006 is upon us. I have patiently waited to see the Political Reformers (Edwards, Niu, Pohiva, et al) detailed plan for this reformation. So far, nothing worth spitting! I am restless and I am close to giving up on some of our own reformers. So far, they claim to have THE plan but they are not willing to share it with the public. Nuku'alofa, Tonga : THE King of Tonga left Tonga to go to New Zealand yesterday for medical reasons in what appeared to be a hasty departure, since the 87-year-old king had only just returned to Tonga from New Zealand on December 5 and was expected to be at home in Tonga over Christmas and the New Year.
