Dubai, United Arab Emirates : The issues of displacement and forced migration, as impacts of climate change, are real concerns for vulnerable developing countries, including Tonga and small Pacific islands, Tonga’s Speaker of Parliament Lord Fakafanua, told a High Level Segment for Speakers, on 6 December, on the side of the COP28 Climate Summit in Dubai, UAE.

Dubai, United Arab Emirates : Tonga will be among the first beneficiaries of the BRACE Project, a US$70 million dollar investment launched at COP28, to help build climate resilience in schools. The project aims to construct climate-resilient schools, with an initial focus on Tonga, Cambodia, and South Sudan, as pilot countries, to benefit four million safer schoolchildren, setting a precedent for global collaboration toward a resilient educational future. Dubai, UAE : King Tupou VI called for the creation of a Pacific-led community resilience financing facility and urged all partners to contribute to funding its establishment. Honiara, Solomon Islands : Tonga is bringing home two gold medals from the 2023 Pacific Games after the national netball team, Tala, won gold at Friendship Hall in Honiara, on Saturday, 2 December. Tonga also bagged a respectable number of silver and bronze medals. New Caledonia won an overwhelming 197 medals at SOL2023 held in Honiara, Solomon Islands, from 19 November to 2 December. -

Dubai, UAE : A State of the Global Climate report confirms that 2023 is set to be the warmest year on record. Data until the end of October shows that the year was about 1.40 degrees Celsius above the pre-industrial levels, delegates at COP28 heard. Tonga's Prime Minister Hon. Hu'akavameiliku and delegates, are in Dubai for the 28th meeting of the United Nations Climate Change Conference or Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC (COP28) that runs from 30 November to 12 December. Nuku'alofa, Tonga : The popular beachfront at Popua in the capital, Nuku'alofa, is looking cleaner today, thanks to a group of university students from New Zealand who decided to spend their last day in Tonga picking up rubbish. Nairobi, Kenya : The Pacific Tourism Organisation (SPTO) received the Commonwealth Secretary-General’s Innovation for Sustainable Development Awards 2023 in Nairobi, Kenya on Monday 27 November, for its project, the "Pacific Sustainable Tourism Policy Framework (PSTPF) 2030." Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Two Police officers, Penitiketo Latu and Taliai Tapueluelu, were found guilty of causing serious bodily harm to a young soldier (19), whom they kicked on the mouth, fracturing his jaw using their police boots, as he lay defenceless and unconscious, on the floor of the Neiafu Police Station, in Vava’u in 2021. Nuku'alofa, Tonga : The Japan International Cooperation Agency’s (JICA) volunteer program, known as (JOCV) Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers, celebrated 50 years of service in Tonga on 23 November, with a function at the Tanoa Hotel. Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Domestic rainwater tanks are often contaminated and unsafe to drink if not managed and cleaned regularly, a recent study has shown. Conducted by Tonga's Ministry of Health, Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, and the Asian Development Bank, the study found drinking water is often contaminated with E. coli. Premium content -
