Nuku'alofa, Tonga : A team of 35 medical professionals from Open Heart International (OHI) in Australia are currently in Tonga performing open heart surgery on locals with rheumatic heart disease. The lead surgeon stressed that Tongans need to try and prevent acute rheumatic fever, a disease that occurs from having tonsillitis that is not treated with antibiotics early enough. -

Auckland, New Zealand : On 22 September, Tonga’s national rugby team, the ‘Ikale Tahi, will play England – the world’s largest rugby nation – in their first game of the 2019 World Cup. London, United Kingdom : The global transition from carbon-intensive fossil fuels to cleaner, more reliable renewables like wind and solar is already well underway. But the big question – for the 2020s and beyond – is how fast it will happen. A slow transition would mean that energy-sector incumbents continue to flourish, and we would all but certainly miss the emissions-reduction targets enshrined in the 2015 Paris climate agreement. But if the transition is rapid, incumbents will experience varying degrees of disruption – the price of keeping the Paris targets well within reach. As matters stand, both scenarios are possible, representing two paths that lie before us. -

Nuku‘alofa, Tonga : Arrangements for the state funeral of the late Prime Minister Hon. 'Akilisi Pohiva who died in Auckland last week, are expected to be confirmed by the Prime Minister's Office on Monday 16 September. A tentative programme released at the weekend stated that the funeral party will depart at 2:00pm on Tuesday from RNZAF Whenuapai Airport, with repatriation by the Royal New Zealand Airforce, arriving in Tonga at a time to be confirmed, with interment on Thursday.1 comment Premium content -

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : HM Queen Nanasipau‘u gave a cultural presentation at the launching of the book ‘Songs & Poems of Queen Sālote’ (Reprinted, 2019 Vava'u Press) on September 10 in Nuku’alofa. Queen Nanasipau‘u was one of three Presenters who offered different perspectives of the compositions which form an important part of Tonga’s cultural heritage. The launch also celebrated 40 years of publishing in Tonga by Vava‘u Press Ltd. -

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Local Tongan outrigger canoe athlete, Malakai ‘Ahokava (36), is aiming to qualify for the 2020 Olympics in kayak sprints with two-time Olympian Pita Taufatofua, after having a taste of high level competition last month in Szeged, Hungary. “If this sport is brought to Tonga, I’m telling you, it is a natural fit for Tongan people.
