    : A new survey on lymphatic filariasis (kulokula fua) is being conducted in Tonga to follow-up on tests made in the last survey in 2015. The Ministry of Health is collaborating with experts from the University of Queensland (UQ), in investigating lymphatic filariasis by blood testing at schools in Kolomotu'a, Veitongo, Tatakamotonga, Vaotu'u, Utulau, and Sia'atoutai.

    : Capital punishment as a deterrent for illicit drugs offences, was rejected 38 to 8 by debaters who were invited by the Speaker, Lord Fakafanua, to participate in the first public debate held in the Parliament House in Nuku'alofa yesterday, 28 May. Those who argued for the right to life, said there was not any evidence to show that the death penalty was a deterrent and there were other solutions aside from executions.

    : A young Tongan police woman, Hola ‘i Moana Tauvaka has qualified as a heptathlete for the Oceania Athletics Championship to be held in June in Suva, Fiji. PC Tauvaka will compete in the heptathlon, across seven combined events including the 100-meter hurdles, 200-meter run, 800-meter run, high jump, long (broad) jump, shot put, and javelin throw.

    : Tu’utalelei ‘Atuekaho (42) was sentenced to nine months imprisonment, fully suspended, for possession of 0.15 grams of methamphetamine and drugs utensils. He was ordered to do 100 hours of community work. “Given the problems faced by our country as a result of the rise in drug related offending, a first time offender should not expect to walk off without some kind of punishment being given,” said the Judge.

    : Tongan civil defence authorities called for a major evacuation of low-lying areas in Tongatapu and Ha'apai this morning, urging people to move inland to higher ground, after a strongly shaking 6.7 magnitude earthquake was felt in Tongatapu, Ha’apai, and Vava’u at 9:47 am (TOT) today, 27 May 2024. An urgent tsunami alert issued at 9:55am local time was cancelled at 11:00am, after the tsunami threat passed. So far, there have been no reports of damage or injuries.

    : Land reclamation for the Government’s prefab houses project is underway at Popua, near the Sia Heu Lupe, where, it is said, they will construct over a hundred houses in time for the Pacific Islands Forum leader’s meeting in the last week of August. The site preparation, now into its third week, will continue until the end of May, before construction begins in June.

    : Five men were found guilty of charges including theft, abetment to theft and receiving stolen property after over 300 cartons of meat were stolen from a container belonging to Star Fish company, at Ma’ufanga. One of the accused was a security guard who was paid “to look the other way” over a period of months in 2022. They will be sentenced in June.

    Honiara, Solomon Islands
    : A two-week long 'Operation Tui Moana', combating Illegal Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing across the Pacific, closed today, 24 May 2024. The Tongan Royal Navy took part in the Operation that reported over 500 vessel contacts, using air, surface and remote-sensing platforms, with a total of 80 boardings in port and at sea. Ten vessels of interest were detected and reported to Members for further investigation.

    : The Legislative Assembly of Tonga passed the first reading of the 2024/2025 Appropriation Bill 2024 today. They are planning for expenditure of $899.2 million, with $452.3 million to be funded by Government and $446.9 million from development partners. The second reading is scheduled for 6 June.

    : Siosaia Taulahi (20) and Tevita Pasi (21) were imprisoned for serious housebreaking, theft and receiving valuable Tongan handicrafts worth around $231,700, stolen from the Tonga National Museum in 2022. Pasi was also sentenced for supplying methamphetamine to a minor. He manipulated a child to become involved in a high value theft of significant cultural artefacts and used the allure of illicit drugs to do so. It was a “deeply offensive crime”, said the judge. “The vandalism of the museum was a terrible act.” Most of the items stolen were never recovered.

    : Volcanic activities at Tofua Volcano have ceased in the last seven days. The Tofua Volcano is now considered safe for sailors to travel and navigate, the Volcano Watch Team of the Tonga Geological Services stated today, after satellite images monitoring the thermal anomaly of Tofua showed that it remains at its normal state.
