Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Tonga's parliament met yesterday, January 31, to pass a decision on a Motion for a Resolution to dismiss the auditor general, Pohiva Tu'i'onetoa, for bad behavior, but the special session ran into some problems. The motion will effectively put the auditor general on trial by parliament - and complicated by the fact that the House is the judge, the prosecutor and also the plaintiff. Nuku'alofa, Tonga :Seventeen secondary school rugby players will take up rugby scholarships in New Zealand this year. The manager of Tonga's Institute of Sports, Tu'ivaita Ueleni, said that the players included nine from the Under-18 team that toured New Zealand late last year. The nine players who left Tonga on January 21 to attend the Onehunga Technical Institute are Paula Fifita, Sami Taufa, Fe'aomoeuasi Hui, Taniela 'Ofa, Fetuli Paea, Sailosi Vaeatangitau, 'Ilaia Moala, Sione Kafatolu and Niukapu Taufa.

Nuku'alofa, Tonga :The Speaker of the Tonga Legislative Assembly, Lord Lasike has surrendered another passport to the Supreme Court on January 27, after pleading not guilty to a charge of unlawful possession of ammunition.

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : The Tonga Rugby Union Authority's administration of Tongan national rugby ends on February 28, but a new board is not expected to take over until the end of April. -

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates : MASDAR, Abu Dhabi's multifaceted renewable energy company, signed today (18 January) a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Government of the Kingdom of Tonga, represented through the Tonga Energy Road Map Implementation Unit (TERM IU). Masdar will be in charge of the implementation and construction of a 500 kW solar photovoltaic power plant to be installed in Vava'u Island. The project, is financed by a grant provided by Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD), the solar plant will deliver around 13 percent of Tonga's annual electricity demand.Premium content
