    Nuku'alofa, Tonga
    : Tonga's local telephone and internet service providers, Tonga Telecommunications Corporation (TCC) and Digicel are using satellite links to restore their services to the two outer islands groups, with hopes that the domestic submarine fibre optic cable might be fixed in the next few weeks. The cable ship CS Lodbrog is expected to arrive in Tongan waters on Wednesday.

    : Stray dogs are being rounded up in Nuku'alofa this week, ahead of the Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting here at the end of August. Assisted by Tonga Police and volunteers, a team of vets from Animal Fiji has commenced a “Trap Neuter & Return” program around the designated hotel accommodation and conference areas. The neutering is expected to make the dogs less aggressive and less likely to roam and fight.

    Paris, France
    : Team Tonga swimmer, Noelani Day, and sprinter, Maleselo Fukofuka, completed their events on Saturday 3 August, at the Paris24 Olympics. Noelani finished third in her heat, in the 50m Women's Freestyle at the Paris Aquatics Centre, while Maleselo recorded a personal best time in the Men's 100m sprint at the Stade de France. Tonga's four Olympians have all now completed their events at Paris24.

    : The proportion of women in business leadership has mostly remained steady since 2021, in Tonga, where men still hold over four out of every five board director positions, and the number of boards with no women directors at all has increased, from 22% in 2021 to 31% in 2024, according to a new report published by the Asian Development Bank’s (ADB’s) Pacific Private Sector Development Initiative (PSDI).

Postdoctoral research fellows Dr. Siobhan Tu’akoi and Dr. Samuela 'Ofanoa launched their research projects this year in South Auckland communities, funded by the Health Research Council of New Zealand.

    : Team Tonga joined the grand opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics on Friday, 26 July, and were onboard one of the 85 boats carrying 6,800 athletes 6km along the River Seine towards the Eiffel Tower. Flagbearers were swimmer, Alan Uhi, and boxer, Fe'ofa'aki 'Epenisa. Alan and Fe'ofa'aki completed their competitions during the weekend, while Noelani Day and Maleselo Fukofuka will have their heats on 3 August.

    : The damage assessment on Tonga's domestic submarine fibre-optic cable will be delayed by at least a week, while the repair ship has stopped in Fiji, Tonga Cable Ltd said today. The ship was supposed to depart yesterday and arrive in Tonga today to assess the damage to the cable that blacked out on 29 June.

    : Tongan swimmer Noelani Day (21), a two-time Olympian, is set to compete in the women’s 50m freestyle heat at the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics Games. “Representing your nation is one of the greatest things that you can do, so for me, it's a really big blessing," said Noelani, who hails from Holonga, Tongatapu, and trains in California.
