Three baby Pilot Whales were rescued from the shallow waters of eastern Vava'u, in Tonga, after being stranded for nearly a week. But the mother whale and two other whales that were stranded with the pod died from injuries believed to be caused by a shark attack.

Tonga'’s 33 nobles this morning, March 16, elected their nine representatives to the Tongan parliament. For Tongatapu the three incumbent members, noblemen, Vaha'i, Tu'ivakano and Fohe were re-elected. Vaha'i with 10 votes, Tu'ivakano with 8 and Fohe with 7.

I note with incredulity, in reading the Press Release from the Prime Minister's Office today, that Government proclaims that an, "elevated sensitivity to public sentiments was formalized in the establishment of the Commission for Public Relations". To call this a "meritorious trend" is simply hogwash in light of the fact that the Prime Minister's Office and its Chief Secretary have led the way in ignoring the decisions and recommendations of the Commissioner for Public Relations.

Good governance is what good governments do. And although "good" can be a subjective abstraction, an honest appraisal of Government procedures will show that within its legal, historical and cultural framework, the process of governing and implementing decisions have the required elements that characterize good governance. From the empowerment of the different levels of political dispensation, to the operation of the executive machinery, decisions and appointments by the Government has been carried out increasingly with a view towards inclusiveness, accountability, transparency and the rule of law.

Led by three candidates for Thursday's Parliamentary Election, about 50 demonstrators marched down the main street of Nuku'alofa this morning March 14, protesting about the privatisation of Tonga's electricity supply.
