Obituary. Elizabeth Bott Spillius, a distinguished psychoanalyst and anthropologist who, through a chance friendship with Queen Sālote, made a valuable contribution to studies of Tongan society, has died in London on July 4 at the age of 92 years, after an illness.

A Japanese national Masanori Kawaguchi (63), who performed the ceremonial role of the King’s kai fono at the royal Taumafa kava ceremonies for two kings of Tonga, was buried at Mala’e’aloa on Thursday, 25 February.

Vava'u, Tonga
The coronation celebrations of HM King George Tupou V finally ended with a Royal picnic on Nuku Island, Vava'u, on August 21. The celebration officially has taken 22 days, from the start in Nuku'alofa on August 1 until August 22 when the king left the Lupepau'u Airport , Vava'u to return to Tongatapu. There were four coronation celebrations, in Tongatapu, Ha'apai, Niuatoputapu, Niuafo'ou and Vava'u. Photos by Kololiana Naufahu

During Tonga's coronation celebrations 270 people were named to receive honours, with many attending the investiture ceremony at the Royal Palace on July 31. Topping the medal list was HM King George Tupou V, himself, and his mother HM Queen Halaevalu Mata'aho.

Seven Lakalaka, the great historical dances of Tonga, will be performed on Saturday, August 2 at Pangai Lahi during the Coronation Celebration of HM King George V, but they exclude the most famous Lakalaka of all the Tatakamotonga, which apparently the king does not want to see.
