‘Atenisi senior lecturer, Vasalua Jenner-Helu, has been accepted as a Visiting Academic in Linguistics at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom for three months at the end of the year, where she intends to research chauvinist attitudes towards Austronesian language among 19th century British linguists, supporting a forthcoming PhD thesis focusing on the compromise of the Tongan language by European missionaries.

A $1.12 million water tank project funded by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) will provide a safe and climate resilient water supply for some schools in Tonga. At the signing of the agreement on 20 March, the Acting CEO for Finance, Ms. Pisila ‘Otunuku, said that the project will ensure the sustainable management of water that is safe, clean, and accessible, especially for the children and vulnerable people.

The Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency (FFA) today, 21 March, launched a major upgrade and development to their monitoring and surveillance efforts, with two new systems built for vessel registrations and Port State Measures. The e-PSM system is a critical tool in the fight against Ilegal Unreported and Unregulated fishing (IUU) in the Western and Central Pacific. Tonga is the first country to implement the e-PSM which allows efficient data exchange.

The government-owned Lulutai Airlines Limited sold a new issue of shares to the Retirement Fund Board in August last year, a recent filing with the Tonga Business Registry reveals. To raise capital the airline issued 784,314 additional ordinary shares to the Retirement Fund Board (27%) and brought in two new directors to the company.

The Pacific Australia Labour Mobility scheme lures workers from Pacific Island Nations and Timor-Leste with promises of opportunity and money. Yet once workers arrive in Australia, they have to face the reality of poor working and living conditions. Tonga is home to one of the largest cohorts of Pacific Islanders who come to work in Australia on PALM visas - equivalent to 9% of the Tongan working age population. A tree planting ceremony at the Fale Alea compound in Nuku'alofa on 7 March was initiated by the Speaker of the House, Lord Fakafānua and the Chargé d’Affaires ad interim of the Chinese Embassy, Mr Ruan Dewen. A total of $151,893.62 pa'anga was granted by the Chinese Government to the Legislative Assembly’s Tree Planting Initiative and nurseries in Tonga can apply for grants of up to $10,000 under the program.
