The 2022 eruption of a submarine volcano in Tonga was more powerful than the largest U.S. nuclear explosion, according to a new study. A 15-megaton volcanic explosion from Hunga-Tonga Hunga-Ha'apai generated a mega-tsunami with waves up to 85 meters (279 feet) high one minute after the explosion of "Blast 5", and hitting Tonga's coastlines up to 45-meters high (148 feet) at Tofua Island and waves up to 17 meters (56 feet) on Tongatapu. A new simulation in the study led by scientists at the University of Miami and the Khaled bin Sultan Living Oceans Foundation also suggests that the eruption location relative to urban centers saved Tonga from a worse outcome.

At a time when labour mobility in Tonga and the Pacific has raised concerns in the face of continuing migration of thousands of labourers overseas, Tonga is implementing a supply management strategy as a pillar of its three-year-old Labour Mobility Policy. “The findings presented to us, highlights the need for the Strategy,” said the Prime Minister Hon. Hu’akavameiliku in launching the strategy on 13 April.

Growth in Tonga’s economy is projected to reach 2.5% in 2023 expanding further to 3.2% in 2024, according to the latest edition of the Asian Development Bank's economic report presented in Nuku'alofa today, 13 April. ADB Public Sector Economist, James Webb said, like its South Pacific neighbours, Tonga has faced an immensely difficult past three-years. Inflation is forecast to accelerate to 9.4% this year, with remittances providing some potential relief to households.
