Growing up in Fasi Moe Afi, on the island of Tongatapu, 'Isitolo Siale's classroom wasn't just in school, it was in the local market.

At the age of 10, 'Isitolo, the eldest of three siblings, found himself selling sugarcane, bananas, and papaya to contribute to his single mother's income.

This small yet significant contribution fuelled his desire to build a better life for his family and became the foundation for his success at The University of the South Pacific (USP).

'Isitolo recently graduated with a Bachelor of Arts, Double Major in Geography and History from USP’s Tonga Campus, but his path was anything but conventional.

He said this taught him the value of responsibility and gratitude, lessons he carried with him throughout his academic journey.

“Growing up, it was my mother who raised us as a single parent, with the support of our grandfather. Their hard work and love shaped the person I am today,”  he said.

“I grew up in a rural community surrounded by crops, fruits, and nature. On weekdays, our meals mostly came from my grandfather’s plantation, and only on Sundays did we have meat or a complete meal.”

“I ...began selling fruits, papaya, bananas, sugarcane, at school. I usually earned about $4.00 per day, and I saved the money, either to help my mother or buy lunch for my sisters.”

The motivation to study at USP came from a television broadcast.

In 2013, 'Isitolo watched the USP Tonga Choir perform their rendition of “Garland of Achievement” at the USP Tonga Campus Graduation, with King Tupou VI of Tonga serving as Chancellor.

“After that, I started doing my homework about USP, as it is one of the respected regional universities, widely recognised both locally and internationally,” he said.

“I saw it as a place where I could connect with students from across the Pacific who share the same passions and ambitions. Its diversity and academic reputation made it the right choice for me.”

'Isitolo joined USP in 2019 as a Preliminary student. His fascination with Tonga's weather patterns and natural hazards naturally led him to Geography studies, a programme offered at the USP Tonga Campus.

USP Tonga Campus was the only institution in the country offering this field at a high standard. The first few weeks were challenging as I adjusted to a new learning environment, but I was determined to succeed,” he said.

“As someone deeply passionate about Geography and History, fieldwork brings the learning experience to life. During our Fiji field trip last year, I enjoyed visiting rural communities, listening to their stories, and learning both academically and personally.”

One of the greatest highlights of his USP journey wasn't a grade, but a commitment to service.

Student president

'Isitolo served with the USP Tonga Campus Student Association (USPSA Tonga), first as an executive member in 2021, and later elected President in 2023 and again in 2025.

“Through USPSA Tonga, I had the honour of advocating for students’ welfare, organising events, implementing supportive initiatives, and creating a more positive campus experience,” he shared.

“Serving the students has been one of my proudest achievements and the defining highlight of my time at USP.”

In a full circle, 'Isitolo’s graduation ceremony in October 2025 was officiated by King Tupou VI, during the King's second term as the Chancellor of USP.

'Isitolo’s top tips for success were to “Put God first.”

“When the road gets tough, seek His guidance. Prayer has been my greatest source of comfort and strength,” he said.

onnected to your purpose.”

“I also recommend that you adopt a pet. Pets are an incredible source of emotional support. I have seven cats and five dogs, and during my lowest moments, they were always by my side. Their presence alone brings comfort and peace.”

As he prepares to pursue his Postgraduate Diploma next year, 'Isitolo encourages students to stay focused and determined.

"Everyone comes to university with a goal, and when you commit yourself fully to that goal, the journey becomes clearer and the results more rewarding."
