Following the Fiji Government's sudden arrest and deportation of Vice-Chancellor of the University of the South Pacific Professor Pal Ahluwalia, the USP Council on Friday, appointed Tonga’s Dr Masasso Paunga as interim Acting Vice-Chancellor. Tonga’s USP representatives are part of sub-committee looking into the deportation issues.

Children with specific learning needs will be helped with early literacy skills development using Tongan language alphabet flashcards developed for the schools they attend. Funded by by Australia's Direct Aid Program, 400 packs of flashcards were printed for distribution under the Ministry of Education's Inclusive Education programmes.

He launched four new Queen Elizabeth scholarships for students from the Caribbean and Pacific regions to support more young people in reducing the effects of climate change in their home countries.

Twenty-six Tongan students have been awarded tertiary scholarships to study in New Zealand and Fiji starting this year, funded by the New Zealand Government through its Aid programme. New Zealand universities have accepted 21 scholars, while Fiji’s University of the South Pacific has accepted six.
