The popular beachfront at Popua in the capital, Nuku'alofa, is looking cleaner today, thanks to a group of university students from New Zealand who decided to spend their last day in Tonga picking up rubbish. The group of 15 young women from throughout New Zealand, led by Leata Loelu, have spent a fortnight in Tonga engaging in community services.

The Pacific Tourism Organisation (SPTO) received the Commonwealth Secretary-General’s Innovation for Sustainable Development Awards 2023 in Nairobi, Kenya on Monday 27 November, for its project, the "Pacific Sustainable Tourism Policy Framework (PSTPF) 2030." SPTO's 20 Pacific Island member countries are committed to to sustainable tourism, its CEO Christopher Cocker said.

The Japan International Cooperation Agency’s (JICA) volunteer program, known as (JOCV) Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers, celebrated 50 years of service in Tonga on 23 November, with a function at the Tanoa Hotel. A total of 568 volunteers have served in Tonga, and four volunteers are currently in-country.

The artist who loved Tonga, Sune Egan, passed away peacefully in Forster, NSW, Australia, on Sunday 19 November, five months after her 93rd birthday. Sune's paintings of Tongan people and scenery on tapa cloth, created over three decades from 1975, captured a nostalgic landscape and people with a simpler way of life than the Tonga of today.

Ex-Tropical Cyclone Mal has moved away from Tongan waters. Tonga Met reported that the cyclone system located to the southwest of Tonga had weakened to a low pressure, yesterday and will no longer directly affect Tonga. Previous gale warnings for Tele-ki-Tonga and Tele-ki-Tokelau coastal waters have since been downgraded to strong wind warnings.

Anne-Marie Trevelyan arrived in Tonga last night, for her first ministerial visit since the British High Commission in Tonga re-opened in 2020. Minister Trevelyan participated in the 52nd Pacific Island Forum Dialogue Partners Day, last week, in Rarotonga. “It was a really effective meeting,” she said.

Hu’akavameiliku met with the Secretary General of the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS) HE Mr. Georges Rebelo Chikoti, in Rarotonga, Cook Islands. The Samoa Agreement to be signed by the European Union and its Member States, and the 79 Member States of OACPS, on 15 November 2023 in Samoa, is the first comprehensive partnership agreement between the OACPS and EU to be signed in the Pacific.

The Water Safety Planning process will result in a Quality Risk Assessment for the Nuku’alofa Water Supply System. At a second workshop, the Ministry of Health and ADB, will present findings from a recent pilot study on Village Water Supply systems in Tongatapu.
