A new upscale hotel, resort, and convention centre is set to be built at Tonga’s Parliament Precinct, in a move expected to deliver significant economic benefits and strengthen the country’s tourism sector.
The development follows a Memorandum of Understanding signed earlier this month between Sudima Hotels and King Tupou VI, marking what leaders describe as a major step forward for Tonga’s economic future and a clear example of New Zealand–Tonga partnership in action.
During a visit to Tonga on 17 March, Christopher Luxon congratulated both parties on the agreement, noting Sudima Hotels is “a strong and reliable partner in New Zealand’s tourism sector” and describing the collaboration as “a positive step for Tonga’s development.”
Tonga’s Prime Minister Lord Fakafanua welcomed the deal, saying, "We also welcome growing private sector collaboration from business and investors, including a recently signed memorandum of understanding between Sudima Hotels in New Zealand and His Majesty King Tupou VI for the development of a hotel at the new Parliament precinct, which will further contribute to Tonga’s economic development and tourism sector."
He added the investment will help the country meet rising demand for quality accommodation, while delivering direct economic gains.
