Tonga urgently needs an illicit drugs rehabilitation centre due to the rising number of drug users, said Head Psychiatrist Dr. Mapa Puloka and counsellor Mele Prescott at the National Development Summit session on “Security and Illicit Drugs” at Fa'onelua Convention Centre. "Previous governments have been asked for this," said Dr. Puloka.

Seluvaia Mailelua (42) pleaded guilty to possession of 1.15 grams of methamphetamine, attempted destruction of evidence when she attempted to swallow the packet of meth, possession of 0.58 grams of cannabis and unlawful possession of utensils, namely one smoking pipe.

Capital punishment as a deterrent for illicit drugs offences, was rejected 38 to 8 by debaters who were invited by the Speaker, Lord Fakafanua, to participate in the first public debate held in the Parliament House in Nuku'alofa yesterday, 28 May. Those who argued for the right to life, said there was not any evidence to show that the death penalty was a deterrent and there were other solutions aside from executions.

In delivering his verdict Mr Justice Cooper was critical of the Crown prosecution's attempts to to call a convicted drug user to attempt to undermine the evidence of two police officers. “That sort of error needs to be properly understood so it is not repeated,” he warned.
