National consultations are being held in Nuku'alofa this week on how to tackle the rising problem of illicit drugs, particularly methamphetamine. The Tonga Government invited the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat to hold consultations to assist policy formation.

Drug busts by a Tonga Police Drugs Taskforce in December last year seized methamphetamine and cannabis packed ready for sale, after some arrests were made on the main street in the Nuku'alofa Central Business District of men allegedly attempting to sell the illicit drugs.
