When the Prime Minister told the House this week that the Reserve Bank should tell the commercial banks to reduce their interest rates and to reduce their profit to not more than $2 million pa’anga per annum - one wonders if the Prime Minister had discussed the issue with his Minister of Finance? Great article! Talk about
Great article! Talk about hitting the nail on the head.
I'm amazed at the media cross platforms that are now either for or against government. We used to have the Times and Kelea on one side and Chronicle on the other. Now we have 7 media outlets all against each other's political perspectives with good old MT still in the middle. Please don't change or try and build a popular position as we who are not in Tonga will be left totally in the dark.
All I have been able to decipher from the performance of this government is a total lack of sustainable development with a PM intent on gaining headlines with anything that may garner popular reaction.
Media outlets around the world chase every head of government for an interview and would in fact, if allowed, pay 250 US$ for the opportunity to interview half of them. This PM must be the first in history that has to actually pay for an interview and the ridiculous expense was uncovered....
Your latest article on the banks and the PM's unbelievable comment that “the people will have liked the debate in the house” is demonstration of what he is trying to do ...misguiding the public with anti-this and anti-that, blaming the economic woes and lack of opportunity on easy targets that really have nothing to do with it, but garnering support through the poor people of Tonga [against] anyone or institution that has more than the guy on the street.
Tonga deserves better, the people and the Crown deserve a government that will lead the kingdom to prosperity, not a political furor just because we have democracy. If democracy is what has produced today's government then the people deserve better, even an absolute monarchy where we have a king we can trust to put our interests first not political agenda is better.
We don't have the time to try and wait until some decent government gets in, we may not have a Tonga by then, just another failed Pacific state that's a problem for our friends NZ and Oz. Just look around the PI map.
We once ruled half of the Pacific and when we had not democracy we demanded the respect of the rest of the Pacific, including NZ and Oz. Now we are just another PI joke, too small, unable to work together and with 12 members of cabinet intent on just getting what they can, when they can. This is without doubt the most self-serving PM in his own interests under the flag of the people....
Briev you are absolutely
Briev you are absolutely correct on all points. The PM is going to destroy Tonga, and sooner that many would seem to know. And so much for democracy when now they are going to stop/block social media site's such as Facebook into Tonga, the whole world is running on Facebook, just look at Every tourist in Tonga and you will see them on Facebook for this is the way 90% of people communicate with friends and family, but here we go good ole Tonga gonna ban/block these sites....just plain . . . tourism is the way forward for Tonga, but tourists are clubbed over the head . . . . , now we are gonna have even more....
