Flight diversion order continues to 4 April

Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Tonga will continue its diversion order for incoming flights during the week 29 March to 4 April 2020, to prevent the introduction or spread of CoViD-19.

Under a Diversion Order issued yesterday 28 March 2020, by the Chief Executive Officer for Health Dr Siale 'Akau' ola, the following flights are prevented from landing in Tonga:

  1. Fiji Airways.
    Expected Date of Arrival between 29 March 2020 to 4 April 2020:
    - Monday 30/03/2020 FJ211
    - Tuesday 31/03/2020 FJ211
    - Thursday 02/04/2020 FJ211
    - Saturday 04/04/2020 FJ211.
  2. Air New Zealand.
    Expected Date of Arrival between 29 March 2020 to 4 April 2020:
    - Monday 30/03/2020 NZ270
    - Friday 03/04/2020 NZ270.
  3. Talofa Airlines.
    Expected Date of A1Tival between 29 March 2020 to 4 April 2020:
    - Monday 30/03/2020 TA407
    - Thursday 02/04/2020 TA407

The diversion order was issued under section 117(1) and (2)(c)(i) of the Public Health Act.

“I have reasonable grounds to believe that it is necessary to divert the above-mentioned conveyances (aircrafts) to a place outside the Kingdom to prevent the introduction, or spread of the corona virus disease (COVID-19),” he declared.

“[CoViD-19] is an Emergency Notifiable Condition under the Declaration of an Emergency Notifiable Condition issued on 12 March 2020, and Gazetted on 13 March 2020, or other significant threat to Public Health of the Kingdom as specified under the Declaration of Public Health Emergency on 12 March 2020, and Gazetted on 13 March 2020.”

This is the second week of flight diversions for Tonga.

However, it is expected that special non-commercial flights will be allowed to land from time to time with cargo and emergency medical equipment.
