A seven-country project called “Promoting Nutritious Food Systems in the Pacific Islands” is undertaking a series of regional meetings in Nuku'alofa, Tonga, this week at the Tanoa Int'l Hotel. Yesterday, the first of the meetings aimed to find ways to increase poor rural people’s access to healthy food.

This is the age of fast junk
This is the age of fast junk food. Why you would ask? One can see the problems, fuel for cooking used to be wood not anymore gas is now in use or electricity both cost money and expensive. People don't bother with 'umu anymore this is in the capitol and surrounding areas, people work for money buy cheap food from the market, eg casava, sipi (lamb flaps) muimui'i pipi (turkey tails) kapa pulu (corned beef) and many more unhealthy food that local entrepreneurs buy cheaply from overseas and sold for profit on the local market. If one could see the similarities between those living in the capital and surrounding villages with the Tongans living overseas they, all have one thing in common the highest number of NCD suffers, because of over indulging on junk food, alcohol, smoking, drinking KAVA, with no exercise thereby becoming obese. It's only the people living on isolated remote islands that still live a more healthy life style mostly of sea food cooked the traditional way, but unfortunately they are being inundated with rubbish food due to motor vessels connecting them with the main island, yachts also play a great part in the spreading of unhealthy food among the islands, some time inadvertently in the form of a present. The Japanese who live to be centurions live in either remote areas inland or on isolated island because of their diet eg, rice and noodles are not fattening and they compliment it with fish, sea weed, and other kind of sea food, less meat more vegetables that is the recipe for their longevity. Tongans used to eat Vai lesi, Lu, Veihalo, Limu of different variety, fish and sometimes meat but only occasionally chicken too so there was no shortage of healthy food that could be acquired locally free, the problem is you have to go out and get it, prepare it, cook it before you can eat it and that;s where fast food comes in handy you don't have to do anything but pay for you to be SICK. You could talk till your blue in the face and people will listen and than go out and buy take away. People know that they are responsible for their health , but the resolve to resist wavers and the stomach wins. Only a person can change his lifestyle.
