Suva, Fiji : Over US$100M in micro loans has been handed out to tens of thousands of low-Income women across the Pacific Islands, including Tonga, by the South Pacific Business Development (SPBD) since its launch in 2000. Last Friday, 8 December, it gave out its US$100 millionth loan to entrepreneur Vilisi Tabua, a fish dealer at the Suva Public Market in Fiji.Premium content -

Port Vila, Vanuatu : The Pacific Games Council (PGC) will suspend Tahiti for political interference in Tahitian sporting bodies, following the completion of the 2017 Mini Games in Vanuatu this Friday 15 December. Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Legal action against Tonga for withdrawing from hosting the 2019 Pacific Games has been given full support by members of the Pacific Games Council (PGC) General Assembly at a meeting held last Sunday 10 December, in Port Vila, Vanuatu. Princeton, USA : A Saudi prince has been revealed to be the buyer of Leonardo da Vinci's "Salvator Mundi," for which he spent $450.3 million. Nuku'alofa, Tonga : The dissolution of the Tongan Parliament on 24 August carried a hope that new members of parliament and a new Prime Minister with a new government might be elected to advance the Tongan democratic reform that was introduced in 2010. But that hope faded with the results of the November 16 snap General Election, when voters re-elected 21 of the 26 members of the dissolved parliament.Premium content -

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : A donation of $5100 pa’anga was made to the Alonga Adult Disabled Centre, at Pea on December 8. Tongan artist Uili Lousi collaborated with the New Zealand High Commissioner HE Sarah Walsh in this initiative and presented the cheque to Lavinia Satini, the center’s coordinator with residents present. Manila, Philippines : A new Tropical Tunas Bridging Measure was adopted in the early hours of this morning, after a marathon session by the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission meeting in the Philippines this week. Manila, Philippines : Parties to the Nauru Agreement (PNA) have threatened to pull out of the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC) if the fishing nations and coastal states who make its membership fail to agree on new rules for all-important tropical tuna.
